First and foremost, I always repeat these lines: Please avoid the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers which have a lot of hazardous effects on humans and animals. That’s the main reason, why we promote the use of natural agents or organic pesticides and fertilizers in this gardening website.

What is Asafoetida?

Asafoetida, also known as hing, is a common flavoring agent found in most kitchens. It’s actually dried latex or gum exuded from the rhizome or tap root of Ferula Asafoetida plants.

What is the Scientific Basis of its use in gardening and Farming?

First of all, let’s look into its composition. Typical asafoetida contains about 40–64% resin, 25% endogenous gum, 10–17% volatile oil, and 1.5–10% ash. The resin portion and the volatile oil portion contains a lot of strong compounds that are responsible for its pungent odor and its beneficial properties.  Apart from it’s medicinal properties, Asafoetida has some amazing uses in gardening and farming as a pesticide to control many pests and insects including termites, also to repel rodents and animals from your garden or farm, and also to treat some plant diseases like leaf curl virus or leaf curl disease which otherwise has absolutely no treatment.  We will look into how to use Asafoetida for each of these problems.

How to use Asafoetida to treat Leaf Curl Disease?

Take one liter of sour butter milk. You can also take 500 ml, if you have fewer plants.

Add one teaspoon or about 5 gms of Asafoetida powder to it and mix well.

Let it stay for 1 or 2 hours.

Sieve this solution using a fine cloth to avoid spray bottle clogging.

Spray this thoroughly over the affected plant including the underside of the leaves.

Repeat this every 3 days for 3 – 4 times. Leaf curl disease which is common in pepper and tomato plants will be completely cured by this treatment most of the times.

How to use Asafoetida to Repel Insects and Termites?

Take 50 gms of Asafoetida – raw cake form is better.

Put this in a piece of cotton cloth and make a small sac like this.

Hang this over the tree or plant where you want to repel unwanted insects including termites. The disagreeable odour repels termites and other insects.

How to use Asafoetida to Repel Unwanted Animals and Rodents?

Sometimes these rodents and other animals including our pets like cats and dogs create havoc in our gardens. Most of these animals hate the strong pungent smell of asafoetida. To make it effective you need to use a lot of Asafoetida wrapped up in cotton cloth to repel these animals. Perhaps about 100 gms of Asafoetida may help protect and area of about 1 to 2 square meters. It may not be so much cost effective, but it depends on the intensity of your problem.

How to Use Asafoetida as an Organic Fertilizer and Why?

Using Asafoetida as a liquid fertilizer is said to boost plant immune system and protect it from various diseases in the long run.

  • Add 2 grams of raw Asafoetida or pure powder form to 1 litre of water.
  • Mix it well by stirring continuously.
  • Then water your plants with this solution once in a while, preferably in early growth stages of the plant.
  • You can also mix more of it per liter of water and then dilute the solution accordingly and water your plants once in a while.
  • You can also foliar spray this solution over your plants.

How to use Asafoetida as an Organic Pesticide?

Asafoetida alone may not be effective to control common pests in our gardens like Aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies, thrips, mites and so on. But mixing this with other ingredients can make it a powerful natural pesticide to control these pests.

  • Take 1 litre of water and add 5 gms of Asafoetida powder or cake form.
  • Add Neem oil of about 5 ml.
  • Mix it well and spray it on the affected plants once weekly.

USDA APPROVED ORGANIC PESTICIDES FOR ORGANIC FARMING https://www.gkvks.com/usda-approved-organic-pesticides-for-organic-farming/ https://www.gkvks.com/usda-approved-organic-pesticides-for-organic-farming/#respond Fri, 19 Jun 2020 17:28:55 +0000 http://www.gkvks.com/?p=13871 In Today’s post, we will list some of the best natural pesticides that are approved by the USDA for organic farming and organic gardening. We will also learn how to use these correctly to get rid of all types of pests in your garden.

The pesticides approved in organic farming are largely the natural ones, though a limited amount of synthetic substances are permitted.

Let’s list these synthetic and natural pesticides used in organic farming and learn how to use them one by one.

1. BORIC ACID AND BORAX: This powder is commonly used to play carom has many uses in gardening.  It’s mainly used to treat soil pests and insects like millipedes and also for ant control.  Just sprinkle the boric acid over the areas of infestation and do not water for at least 24 hours. It acts as a contact poison and also as a stomach poison when the pests ingest this powder.

2. COPPER SULPHATE: This is used both as a fertilizer as well as a fungicide. As an anti-fungal, it can be used in the prevention and treatment of fungal diseases like the Powdery mildew, Leaf rust, black spot rose disease and any other serious fungal disease.  This is the most effective anti-fungal in organic gardening.
How to Use it? Mix 20 grams of copper sulfate into 1 litre of water in a spray bottle and spray it on the affected plant. You can repeat this process after 1 week. Prepare only the required solution for the day and do not store it for next use.

3. TRICHODERMA VIRIDE: This is a certified bio-fungicide and is normally present in soil which controls other pathogenic fungi and prevents root rot and other harmful soil fungi. So, this can be used in the treatment of soil fungi, root rot, damping off in seedlings and also to treat fungus affected seeds or to prevent fungal infestation of seeds.
How to use it? For Preventing Canker and stem rot after pruning, make a solution by adding 10 gms in 100 ml water and apply this on the injured stem after pruning to prevent fungal disease.
To Prevent Seed Fungus, add 10 gms powder to 1 kilogram of seeds and mix well.
For plants that are wilting and you suspect a fungal disease in soil and root rot, mix 10 gms per litre of water and drench the plant and soil. Repeat after a week if necessary.
To Mix it in your potting mix, add about 10 gms to a potting mix volume of a 12 inch container and then repot your plant. This is particularly beneficial when you transplant your seedlings into fresh potting mix.

4. BAKING SODA: This is pure sodium bicarbonate which is mainly for cooking purpose and readily available in your kitchen. To use it as a fungicide, you can mix 2 to 3 teaspoons of baking soda in 1 litre of water and mix well and spray on the affected parts. If you want to make it more effective and a universal pesticide, you can add 1 teaspoon of oil like neem oil to this solution plus some 10 drops of liquid soap and spray on the plant. You can also use any vegetable oil, but best is neem oil and also clove oil or eucalyptus oil. Repeat this spray every week till your problem is solved. Apart from this there are about 10 uses of baking soda in gardening. You can check a detailed post on baking soda in garden.

5. DIATOMACEOUS EARTH: This magical organic powder has many uses in gardening like ant control, slug and snail control, preventing animals and rodents in your garden and mainly as an organic pesticide effective against all types of pests like aphids, mites, thrips, mealy bugs, caterpillars and even soil pests and insects. The mechanism of action is it’s a contact poison which kills pests by extreme dehydration. You can check a detailed post on DE powder.

How to use Diatomaceous earth on plants?
First of all Water your plants for the day. Then dust the plants with an applicator or just sprinkle the powder on your plants.  To avoid killing beneficial pollinators like bees and butterflies, do not sprinkle on flowers.

6. HYDROGEN PEROXIDE: Though it a chemical with formula H2O2, which is similar to that of water, but with an extra oxygen atom. This concept is the key for using hydrogen peroxide in gardening. Well, to use it as an effective pesticide and antifungal, add 1 cup that’s about 250 ml of 6% hydrogen peroxide per litre of water or 2 cups of 3% h2o2 per litre of water. Load it in a spray bottle and spray on the plants. To control Fungus gnats and soil pests, you can water the plant with the same solution. Apart from this, hydrogen peroxide has many other miraculous uses like to save a dying plant, as a fertilizer and many other beneficial uses. You can check a detailed post on hydrogen peroxide in gardening.

7. VINEGAR: this is chemically called Acetic Acid. It’s an inexpensive product and found in most kitchens. In gardening we use 5% white vinegar or the distilled white vinegar.  For the treatment of powdery mildew or spot fungus, add One cup of White Vinegar to 1 litre of water and shake well and spray it on the affected leaves. To use it as a pesticide, Add one cup white vinegar to 1 litre of water and then add some 10 drops of liquid soap and spray on the affected plants. You can check a detailed post on uses of vinegar in garden.

8. NEEM OIL:  Neem oil is by far the best Organic Pesticide available worldwide.  Azadirachtin and Nimbin found in neem oil are the two major compounds responsible for its antibacterial and antifungal actions. It is in fact a broad spectrum pesticide and the safest and most effective of all organic or natural pesticides. To learn about how to use it, the dosage and the patch test, You can check a detailed post on neem oil for plants.

GARDEN MILLIPEDES AND PEST CONTROL – ORGANIC REMEDIES https://www.gkvks.com/garden-millipedes-and-pest-control-organic-remedies/ https://www.gkvks.com/garden-millipedes-and-pest-control-organic-remedies/#respond Sun, 01 Sep 2019 15:01:00 +0000 http://www.gkvks.com/?p=2977 Today we will look into some natural or organic remedies to control or get rid off Greenhouse Millipedes or Garden Millipedes in your potting mix and elsewhere in your garden. We will also learn whether these are poisonous and also some chemical pesticides that can kill these pests in your home and garden.

The greenhouse millipede, also known as the hothouse millipede, short-flange millipede, or the garden millipede, is a common creepy pest in your garden that can cause severe damage to emergent vegetable seedlings and young plants.

How do I identify These Millipedes?

There are few types of these millipedes with hundreds of legs and can be white or brown or black in color. Unlike their cousin, the centipede, millipedes are not carnivores, instead they eat dead and rotting vegetation and they hide in moist places like your soil mulch layer, debris or inside the top layer of soil. They prefer darkness and moisture and hence they are more common in rainy season.

Are Millipedes Poisonous or Venomous?

Do not be too scared, Millipedes, unlike centipedes, are not venomous and are generally considered to be non-poisonous. However, there are some millipede species that release some fluids that can cause irritation to human skin. Hence its always better to wear garden gloves and employ safety precautions.

How do I kill or get rid off these garden pests?

There are many solutions to control millipedes. We will list out these one by one in 5 steps:

5. Visible Millipedes can be smashed or can be swept with a broom or a vacuum cleaner and can be disposed. But this is difficult because most of these are not visible and are found hiding under the soil or mulch layer.

4. Sticky Traps and Light Traps are another option that attract and trap these millipedes. But these are not available easily.

3. Chemical Pesticides: We will just name these pesticides because, we will not use any chemicals in our garden, specially vegetable gardening. The chemical pesticides that work are Propoxur, Cyfluthrin, Pyrethrins, Piperonyl butoxide,  Deltamethrin, Cypermethrin, bifenthrin, etc.

2. Chicken and Cats:  Before we proceed to our natural remedies, we will discuss on chicken.  Chicken love to eat these type of insects and pests. Keeping a few hens can do wonders to get rid of these millipedes and even other pests in your garden.Cats, though they do not eat millipedes, they may chase them, play with them and smash them to some extent.

  1. Natural and Organic Pesticides. The mechanism of action of any pesticide whether organic or inorganic chemical is Systemic effect which can be slow in action and Contact poisons which kill the pests when they come in contact with it.
  1. Diatomaceous Earth is first in the list: This white powder is easily available at many garden stores and even online. Its completely harmless to people and pets.
  2. Borax: Similar to Diatomacous Earth, Borax is derived from boric acid and dries the millipedes out and kills them. It also acts as a stomach poison that will kill millipedes if ingested. It’s completely safe to humans. Just sprinkle the boric acid over the areas of infestation and do not water it for atleast 24 hours. You can check out my detailed video and article on boric acid or borax powder for plants and garden.
  • Wood Ash: The action is similar to borax powder which dries out the soil and the pests. I also have a detailed video and article on the benefits of wood ash in gardening.

Dangers of Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides https://www.gkvks.com/dangers-of-chemical-fertilizers-and-pesticides/ https://www.gkvks.com/dangers-of-chemical-fertilizers-and-pesticides/#respond Mon, 04 Feb 2019 04:21:50 +0000 http://www.gkvks.com/?p=2844 Today we will discuss on a very important topic – Dangers of Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides and the best alternatives to chemical NPK fertilizers and chemical pesticides to protect our mother nature.

We all know that plants need Major Primary Nutrients – that’s NPK – nitrogen phosphrous and potassium and also the Secondary or trace or micro nutrients like calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, boron, zinc, and so on. These are either derived from

  1. Natural sources – what we call Organic Fertilizers for example, Cow dung, vermicompost and many other stuff.
  2. Inorganic or Chemical Fertilizers like NPK crystals, DAP, Urea and so on.

Now I will list out the harmful negative effects or the dangers of Chemical fertilizers and Pesticides that you frequently use in farming or home gardening.  You please make a decision yourself after watching this video till the end.

  1. Ground water Pollution:  Nitorgen fertilizers break down into nitrates and can easily go down into the soil. These are water-soluble and can accumulate in groundwater for decades. And if you keep adding more nitrogen over the years, this will have a cumulative effect. Moreover, these effects of chemical fertilizers are compounded when you mix or use a chemical pesticide.
You know the Fertilizer Urea, produces ammonia and contributes to acid rain, groundwater contamination and ozone depletion due to release of nitrous oxide by denitrification process. If we continue this in future, this hazard may increase several fold in the coming decades.

And remember! studies have shown that  Groundwater contamination has been linked to stomach cancer, goitre (thyroid enlargement), birth defects in babies, and  also hypertension.

Also Aquatic life is also significantly affected by water pollution and fish and other water animals may not get adequate oxygen and they can die. These are called Dead zones.

  • Air Pollution: Excessive use of chemical NPKs can release greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. These can cause respiratory problems, cardiac disease, and many cancers. A special mention about  the Blue Baby Syndrome, medically called methemoglobinemia occurs in infants and one cause of this problem is attributed to chemical over use and pollution where due to reduced oxygen in blood, the baby turns blue.
  • Fertilizer Burn: You can burn your favourite plants and crops if used excessively – specially leaf burn and root burn. This fertilizer burn can even kill your favourite plant in addition to the hazards it causes to the environment. This fertilizer burn will not happen when you use organic or natural fertilizers.
  • Depletion of Beneficial Organic Matter, beneficial Microbes and even Minerals from the Soil – that is reduced SOIL FERTILITY: This loss of organic matter can lead to soil acidification, soil compaction and hardening and other ill effects which makes it vulnerable to soil erosions. Researchers also say that depletion of minerals from the soil can also lead to low quality foods with lesser mineral and vitamin content.
  • Though chemical fertilizers will help plants grow faster; plants will not be healthy and strong as plants grown in this manner do not have enough time to mature and develop a strong root system and strong stems, or good nutritious fruits and vegetables. And also they will be less likely to survive because they will be more susceptible to pests and diseases as they lack good immune system against pest attacks.

The Bottom Line: is There is a large threat to environment, animals and human health; chemical fertilizers will ultimately end up leaking into our water bodies; ponds, streams, ground water etc. and contaminate water supply as a result of which humans as well as animals may suffer numerous short term and long term hazardous chemical effects on their health.

So, Lets together take a pledge today to stop using these chemical fertilizers and pesticides and start using organic fertilizers and pesticides to keep our mother earth safe, for the present and for the future!!!

Top 7 Best Natural Pest Control Methods – Organic Pesticides https://www.gkvks.com/top-7-best-natural-pest-control-methods-organic-pesticides/ https://www.gkvks.com/top-7-best-natural-pest-control-methods-organic-pesticides/#comments Tue, 31 Jul 2018 04:21:59 +0000 http://www.gkvks.com/?p=2616 In today’s Article, I shall be listing the best natural ways for your plant pest control needs and they are really very easy to implement and 100 percent safe and organic pest control methods. The last gardening hack will eliminate more than 80 percent pests in just one single shot, specially those resistant aphids, mealybugs,  spider mites, whiteflies and many other bugs in your garden.

The main idea behind these methods is, this saves me a lot of time and Time is really precious!

Here s a list of few easy methods I use.  These include natural pesticides and other simple  methods.

1. Grow Plants Full of Health and Vigour: Yes, Regularly Adding organic composts like vermicompost, decomposed cowdung or horsedung on your top layer of soil is the best way to develop strong and vigorous plants which can resist or withstand these pest attacks.  I also mix organic neem seed meal powder into the soil which combats many pathogens in the soil and also neem cake is a natural fertilizer with many micronutrients.

2. Keep Pest Repelling Plants in your garden. This is infact an easy way of keep many pests away including mosquitoes. You have to do this strategically – like placing these insect-repelling plants near entrances and also interspersed between your other plants which are more prone to pest attacks. There is a long list of such plants – I have listed out these names in these slides on the screen. This is taken from Wikipedia website.  CHECK HERE.

3. Trimming or Pruning the Affected Leaves or branches. This step is really important because this has two benefits. This will reduce the load of pests to be eliminated by a pesticide and also offers the benefits of pruning a plant, that is giving out more branching.

4. Hand Pick and Eliminate. This is actually the best method to eliminate some worms and insects like caterpillars, slugs and snails and other leaf eating worms.

5. Neem Oil Spray: This is by far the most widely accepted natural pesticide spray worldwide. When you have lot of pests, spray your plants thoroughly once weekly or atleast once in 15 days. Then a maintenance or prophylactic dose of once a month if you have no pests in your garden. The Formula is Add 5 ml Pure Neem oil in 1 litre of water + some 10 drops of any liquid soap for the surfactant effect and to coat the leaves.  Do a patch test on a leaf and then spray the whole garden. WATCH a Detailed Video HERE.

6. My Cocktail Organic Pest Spray: If your plant pest load is too high, consider using a mixture of multiple natural oils and other stuff to make a cocktail pesticide spray. I have discussed this recipe in detail in my video titled Universal Pesticide recipe. You can check this VIDEO HERE. What I used is a mixture of Clove Oil, Neem Oil and Optionally Eucalyptus Oil and then liquid soap. This is a really powerful organic pesticide solution. And again,  Always do a patch test on a leaf to check the result before applying on entire plant.

7. And FINALLY, the Best method of pest control which can eliminate more than 80 percent of pests in 1 single shot. When we see these pests damaging our beloved plants, am sure we all feel like burning them to death. But we are helpless, we cannot burn our plants. You can only burn the cut out branches and leaves loaded with pests, which is infact the best way to prevent contamination to other plants. Incineration or burning is one of the best sterilization methods.

So,  The only best way is to either kill them on the plants without damaging our plants or  somehow dissociate them from our plants. Yes, This method is to separate these pests from our plants.  I will demonstrate how powerful this is, so keep watching.   Yes, Am talking about the high pressure  water spray in misting mode using your garden spray gun with the correct pressure.  I will reveal you everything now. How I experimented many methods to finally settle on this method and also the other benefits of this method. First of all there is absolutely no water pressure on your teres garden, because overhead tanks are sitting on the teres or slightly above it.  I am sure all of you agree with me on this point. Most of us must be using the bottle spray to pump or spray pesticides which is a manual method to spray with very little pressure and with lot of effort and time and energy consuming specially if you have too many plants. To overcome this,  First I started with the rechargeable battery operated 16 litre sprayer can. This was actually a good option with good pressure and other benefits like portability and things like that.    But I wanted to connect my multi-mode spray gun with something  like a multipurpose gadget where I can use my coiled hose with this multimode spray gun to do all tasks like water the plants and also spray pesticides and do all in one activity.      And So, I connected my hose to this Double barrelled Self priming 12 v DC pump which is available online actually as a car wash pump. YOU CAN CHECK THIS POST to get all these products used here. I am not promoting this product. You can buy any similar pump and connect according to your plan and requirement and also please suggest more ideas in the comment box so that everyone is benefited.

As you can see, I am spraying this in pressure mist mode on this plant loaded with mealy bugs. See the pressure and with this pressure of fine misting, any pest will definitely dissociate from the plant, even including the underside of the leaves. After washing, you can then spray your regular pesticide.

For me, This is looking  perfect so far, with the desired pressure and options to use it as a watering equipment , pest spraying, misting my plants and also misting or watering my seedlings and  do a lot of stuff. It really saves me a lot of time.

So, there we have it folks, that was in brief on the best ways to control pests in your garden. Please give me a thumbs up If you liked this post. Also tweet or share the video with your gardener friends. Comment below with any query or any feedback regarding this.

Happy Gardening.

Best Natural Pesticide Recipe for Plants | Universal Cocktail Pesticide Formula https://www.gkvks.com/best-natural-pesticide-recipe-for-plants-universal-cocktail-pesticide-formula/ https://www.gkvks.com/best-natural-pesticide-recipe-for-plants-universal-cocktail-pesticide-formula/#respond Fri, 29 Jun 2018 15:22:51 +0000 http://www.gkvks.com/?p=2339 Today we will look into a very Powerful Recipe for the best organic pesticide which can be used as an all purpose or the universal pesticide for both treatment and prevention of pests like aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies, caterpillars and a lot of other pests and bugs in your garden.

By using Chemical Pesticides in our garden, we intentionally release harmful toxic and cancer producing substances into our environment.

Thankfully, there are a number of easily available natural substances that act as organic pesticides and are completely safe to use on our plants.

These home made natural pesticides can kill a variety of pests and bugs in our garden, either singly or in combinations. Combination of multiple substances can help you to provide a broad spectrum killing of a variety of pests like Aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, spider mites, beetles, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, larvae, caterpillars, slugs and snails and many more.

Today, we will look into the formula or the recipe to make this All-purpose cocktail pesticide and most important its completely organic and safe to use.
Before we go into the ingredients, make sure you follow these three rules in applying this natural pesticide for your plants.
1. First and foremost, Always do a patch test on a leaf or a branch before applying all over your garden. If your leaf is getting burnt or wilting, then probably you need to reduce the concentration. And if you learn this adjustment, am sure you will have a pest free garden one day.

2. Secondly, make sure your spray even on the under sides of the leaves, and also flower buds and new growing shoots.

3. And lastly, do not apply during the sunny hours. Best time is evening and after sunset.

Now the Formula or the Recipe for this All purpose Organic Pesticide: We add 4 Ingredients to make this powerful pesticide liquid. This formula is to make 1 litre of this solution.  So to 1 litre of warm water we add:

10 Drops Clove Oil – if you do not have clove oil, you can make a clove solution by taking  1 tablespoon of cloves and then crush them roughly and add this to a cup of warm water and leave it for 1 or 2 hours and then use this solution. Add a cup of this solution to water. But if you are using pure clove oil, you can use 10 drops only.  The one you are seeing here I purchased online and this is approved by the ministry as a safe pesticide for organic vegetable gardening.  You can use any pure clove oil brand from your store. You can find a link to purchase this at my website www.gkvk.in and also from a link in description below this video.

10 Drops Pure Neem Oil – get this from a trusted source. Even this purchase link you can find in description.

5 – 10 Drops of Eucalyptus Oil – This actually drives away bees and wasps. Use it if you do not mind driving away these pollinators or sometimes they are scary for your kids or you have a risk of anaphylaxis or allergic shock to bee or wasp stings or use them in special areas to protect your kids from bee or wasp stings.

10 drops of liquid soap like dish wash soap liquid for the coating or surfactant effect.

Its easy to remember this Formula like the Rule of 10 – that is 10 drops of each of these 4 ingredients.
Mix this well and load into your spray bottle and spray on your plants but first do a patch test and follow the rules already mentioned earlier.
i have used this same recipe and cleared almost all pests from my plants.

Initially you can use this weekly once for 3 weeks and eradicate all pests from your garden. Then as a maintenance dose or prophylactic use it in little lesser dilution atleast once every fortnight or atleast once a month.
